Deputy Sheriff Recruits

To become a Deputy Sheriff, you must:

  • Be a Nash County resident (or live within 20 miles of the county)
  • Be at least 20 years of age
  • Be of good moral character with positive credit history
  • Have a minimum of a high school education (college preferred)
  • Never been charged or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
  • Be physically fit
  • Possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification from the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Division (BLET)

Starting Salary:  $45,925
Senior Deputy:   $52,701 (3 years of service)
Master Deputy:   $60,660 (6 years of service)




Detention Officer Recruits


To become a Detention Officer, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be of good moral character with positive credit history
  • Have a minimum of a high school education
  • Never been charged or convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor
  • Possess or be able to obtain a North Carolina Detention Officer Certification within one year of hire from the North Carolina Sheriff's Training and Standards Division (DOCC)

Senior Detention:  $48,176 (3 years of service)
 Master Detention:  $55,403 (6 years of service)
