Convenience Centers: "How-to"
Acceptable Items:
Household garbage, recyclables, yard waste, bulky items, construction and demolition waste (C&D), tires, batteries, wooden pallets, electronics, appliances, fluorescent light bulbs, cooking oil, oil filters, and motor oil are acceptable items. However, the previously listed items might not be accepted at all convenience centers or there might be limitations on the quantities that can be disposed of at one time. Please see the information below for more details.
Instructions for Disposing of Waste at Convenience Centers:
- A valid Nash County Convenience Center Permit is required and must be visible to dispose of waste.
- Household garbage must be bagged.
- Plastic bottles must be recycled not disposed of in the trash.
- Limbs must be 6 inches in diameter or less and cut to lengths of 6 feet or less. Larger limbs, logs, and stumps must be taken to the landfill.
- No other material can be mixed with yard waste.
- Batteries are collected at all convenience centers for proper disposal.
- Bulky items can include: couches, mattresses, tables, chairs, other furniture and other non-metal items.
- C&D waste is limited to 200 pounds or less per load and lumber cut to lengths of 6 feet or less. Larger loads can be taken to the Nash County Landfill, 3057 Duke Rd, Nashville Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- No bricks, asphalt, concrete, or shingles are accepted at the convenience centers.
- No animal carcasses, animal waste, or auto parts are accepted at the convenience centers.
- Commercial tire disposal is available only at the Nash County Landfill, 3057 Duke Rd, Nashville on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All tires must be off rims and neatly loaded into the appropriate trailer.
- Residents can dispose of light truck and passenger car tires at Stoney Hill, Site #1, 9842 Stoney Hill Church Rd, Middlesex, There is a limit of five tires per trip and all tires must be off rims and neatly loaded into the appropriate trailer. Tires can also be disposed of at the Nash County Landfill, 3057 Duke Rd, Nashville M-F 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
- Waste oil and oil filters can be recycled at all sites except Vicks, Site #4, Hwy 58.
- If more than 5 wooden pallets are being recycled, they must be taken to the Nash County Landfill, 3057 Duke Rd, Nashville.
Items Prohibited from Disposal at Convenience Centers:
- Wet paint, stains, varnishes, diesel fuels, gasoline, and other solvents are strictly prohibited.
- Appliances containing chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant such as refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners
- Burning or smoldering materials
- Agricultural Waste
- Industrial Waste
- Institutional Waste
- Liquid & Hazardous Waste
- Municipal Waste
- Radioactive Waste
Recyclable Items:
- Mixed/commingled recyclables must be removed from plastic/garbage bags and placed directly into the recycling compactor.
- Mixed/commingled newspapers, office paper (not shredded), envelopes, junk mail, paper grocery bags, plastic bottles and jugs, cereal boxes, phone books, magazines, steel and aluminum cans, milk, juice, broth, soup cartons, cardboard, and glass.
- Metals/White goods: No appliances containing chlorofluorocarbon refrigerant (e.g. refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners).
- Waste oil and oil filters can be taken to all sites except Vicks, Site #4 at 3084 NC 58 S, Nashville.
- Cooking oil
- Readable books and clothes can be put in the clothes/shoes recycling bin.
- Light bulbs: Fluorescent, incandescent, halogen and LED
- Electronics: TV's (all types), computers, printers, monitors, cameras, telephones, calculators, vacuum cleaners, stereo equipment, radios and small kitchen appliances
